There are 3 types of fat in the body:
The first is the structural fat, which protects organs and keeps the skin smooth and firm.
The second type is a normal reserve for energy which the body can use to keep going when insufficient food is available.
The third type is the problematic, abnormal fat reserve. This problematic fat reserve is not used by the body when insufficient food is consumed. (in the case of a crash diet)
The reason for this is the functioning of the hypothalamus, an organ which is located at the base of the brain. The hypothalamus controls and regulates many involuntary functions of the body, including the sensation of hunger and the way in which the body manages and stores energy.
When you start a drastic diet, known as a very Low-Calorie Diet, the hypothalamus in the brain interprets it as an emergency or a sign that there is some kind of disaster which makes it impossible to obtain food for an indefinite period. An unfortunate result of such a diet is that the hypothalamus ensures that the abnormal, problematic fat reserve remains protected and unavailable for metabolic purposes.
When you start a very Low-Calorie Diet, the first fat to be burnt is, therefore, the normal fat reserves, followed by structural fat, and only then does the body start using the abnormal “emergency” fat reserves.
However, most dieters never make it to that last stage as they feel famished and unwell because of food deprivation, and give up their diet long before the body starts metabolizing its abnormal fat reserves.
